Jake’s Season Record: 8-10

Last week, I thought it was going to be a spot where the underdogs shined, but I only went 1-2. Arkansas got embarrassed by Georgia and I followed the public money – something I typically try to avoid. Also, I'm still in shock that Cincinnati went into South Bend and got a win. Moving on to this week though, there are a few games jumping off the board to me, starting with a Friday night showdown in the Pac-12.

Free Picks for College Football Week 6

Stanford Cardinal @ #22 Arizona State Sun Devils: Arizona State -13.5 (-105)

10:30 PM ET Friday, October 8th, 2021

This game may slip under most people's radar because it is a West Coast, late-night, Friday football game. On the West Coast though, it will only be 7:30 pm at kickoff, AKA primetime! Both Stanford and Arizona State are coming off surprising wins. The Cardinal was +8.5 to Oregon last week but ended up winning by a touchdown in overtime. It was also a game that Stanford came out hot in but allowed the Ducks to come back before ultimately grabbing the victory. The Sun Devils are now ranked after beating #20 UCLA in a game where the Sun Devils were +3. The first half in this one was back and forth. But Arizona State was the only team to score in the second half, helping pull away for the 19-point victory. I like Arizona State -13.5 (-105) here. The Sun Devils have an offense that refuses to quit over the course of four quarters, and the Stanford defense seems to get tired in the second half. Also, a week before the Cardinals beat the Ducks, they lost to the UCLA Bruins – the only common opponent between Stanford and Arizona State. The Sun Devils pull away with this one in the second half, but I wouldn't grab this line any higher than -14.

#9 Michigan Wolverines @ Nebraska Cornhuskers: Michigan -3.5 (+115); Under 50.5 (-115)

7:30 PM ET Saturday, October 9th, 2021

I'll start off by saying this might be a trap game, but if it is, I have to fall for it. There is no reason that the Michigan Wolverines should only be a -3.5 favorite over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Michigan -3.5 is not the only line I am on in this game, though. I know Nebraska just got a big confidence boost with a home win over Northwestern, but it was preceded by two tough losses against ranked opponents. Maybe the Nebraska offense has started to put things together, but the Cornhuskers face a formidable defense this week from the Michigan Wolverines. Michigan's defense is allowing less than two touchdowns per game. I should note that the Nebraska defense is not far behind, allowing 15.5 points per game so far this season. To me, this indicates a classic Big Ten matchup that sees low-scoring and hardnose defense. I rarely love unders, but Under 50.5 is too big for this game. I'm taking this under because if this is a trap game like I fear, then it will be the Nebraska Blackshirts that keep the Huskers in this game. I expect a defensive showdown between these two teams. Once again, I like Michigan -3.5 (-110) and Under 50.5 (-110). Caesars Sportsbook RF5000 - 936x114

#11 Michigan State Spartans @ Rutgers Scarlet Knights: Michigan State -5.5 (-110)

12:00 PM ET Saturday, October 9th, 2021

Well, if you are reading this and you live in New Jersey, I may suggest taking the short drive west to place this bet in Pennsylvania. For everyone else that might not get that first sentence, New Jersey sportsbooks don't offer lines on Rutgers games. Most of the time that isn't an issue because there isn't a lot of betting interest on the Scarlet Knights, and actually I am only interested in this game because of the other side: Michigan State.  Coming into this game ranked #11 with a 5-0 record, Rutgers should not be a challenge to the Spartans. And after a tune-up win over Western Kentucky last week where the opponent still scored 31 points, I expect a defense that plays this game with a point to prove. The Spartans need to get back to wins similar to the 38-17 victory over ranked Miami three weeks ago. The past two weeks have proven that the Michigan State defense is what may be the Spartans’ weakest link. That weakness comes in the secondary where Michigan State has allowed 300+ yards passing per game. While the Spartans still have some questions to answer, I doubt Rutgers is the team to do it. As long as this spread stays under 7 points, I am riding with Michigan State. I'm on Michigan State -5.5 (-110).

Jake's Stay Away Games

As for some games that I will be staying away from this week, I think Wake Forest @ Syracuse, Maryland @ Ohio State, Georgia @ Auburn, and LSU @ Kentucky all have the makings for upsets but could also be big blowouts. I have no great reads on these games, so I am holding off as of now. Join me in the conversation on Saturday!
