Zach to the Rack NBA Picks For Monday 4/12/2021
Zach’s Season Record: 68-60
Greetings from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I had to get out of the country after last week’s embarrassment. I hate the NBA sometimes. 1-7 last week. I’m sorry, my friends but when Luka Dončić goes 1-9 from three and 6-26 from the field on a Wednesday night, nobody wins. I felt like Eric Andre when he got assaulted by that gorilla in the Bad Trip movie. It hurts having a week like that, especially when social media trolls hit me with things like “Give it up, Selwyn. Go back to hosting game shows.” Trust me, once The Odds Factory’s flagship game show Run The Table returns to on-camera special episodes, I’ll be back. Until then, you’re stuck reading my clever columns and occasionally on-point NBA predictions.
The Clippers look very good, suddenly. Rondo was a HUGE addition to this team, PG13 is playing some of the best basketball of his career, and Kawhi looks like a man on a mission (when he plays). They dusted off the Suns with ease Thursday night – after Phoenix beat the best team in the West, the Jazz, the night before. Perhaps it was back-to-back game fatigue for the Suns, but I truly believe that Rondo makes the Clippers the team to beat in the West. Of course, who knows what will happen come playoff time when they blow more leads than a trumpet soloist. (Wind instrument joke, anybody?) SORRY.
Of course, right when I say this Andre Drummond and Ben McLemore show up in a Lakers uniform and they blow out the Nets without AD or LeBron. Sigh, another weird night in the NBA. Let’s get to the games and get y’all some of that money back.
On paper, this game looks too easy. The Rockets are on a 4-game road losing streak. Phoenix is rested after beasting against the Wizards on Saturday, and the Rockets’ leading scorer is a rookie named Jae’Sean Tate (who will be in the league for a long time – a defensive genius with great court vision). Look for the Phoenix Suns to have similar results against the Houston Rockets as they did versus the Wizards and win by 15-20 or so. Can the Rockets keep it close? Ya never know. Teams like to sit their stars and play the bench to rest the big fellas, and if a guy like Frank Kaminsky is the Suns’ go-to scorer, this game may have a different outcome. The last time they played it was a 133-130 final. I’d still take the Suns.
When we look at sheer scoring efforts from these teams, it can be about as confusing as the news surrounding DMX’s apparent death last week. (RIP, Earl Simmons.) Half the media reported that he had passed, and then his manager claimed he was very much alive... At this point, I feel the same way about the Suns. Having not faced the injury challenges that other teams have, they could be one bad ankle sprain away from an early playoff exit. They’re like DMX. Nobody knows if their season is alive or will be deceased soon. I hope not, but I also hope that they let Booker go for 30 points tonight and they cover the OVER.
DMX’s song, “How’s It Goin Down” is my all-time X bop – and I listened to it while writing this. Hoping that it’s “goin down” the way I told you. If not, there’s not much further down that I can go from Mexico to escape… RIP, Dawg.
