What Are Super Bowl Prop Bets?

Super Bowl prop bets are wagers that revolve around all things SB and generally fall into 3 main categories.

Player Props: Player performance wagers

For example:
  • Who is the MVP?
  • How many yards does Brady throw for?
  • Who scores the first TD?

Game Props: Team-based wagers

For example:
  • Which team will have the most penalties?
  • Which team punts first?
  • And which team has the most turnovers?

Exotic Props: The fun stuff

For example:
  • Who wins the coin toss?
  • How long is the national anthem?
  • Will there be a wardrobe malfunction?
With the nature of prop bets, you can be Mel Kiper III or someone who thought they were coming over to watch fútbol. It does not matter. As long as you like to have fun, Super Bowl prop bets can be a blast.

So How Did It All Start?

Super Bowl prop betting began in 1986 when a single prop bet was available for Super Bowl XX between the Chicago Bears and the New England Patriots. The public was fascinated to see if the Bears’ nose guard/fullback William “The Refrigerator” Perry was going to get a shot to score a TD. Today, prop bets incredibly make up 50% of the money wagered on the game in Vegas. Blueprint For Propitability

We are not talking index funds here, so please do not get too crazy betting on the props. Here are some rules to be smart, and always remember it’s more fun to make money than lose it.
  1. Determine your bankroll. How much are you willing to risk on this Super Bowl prop betting adventure?
    • There will be many bets made over the course of the game, so I would say divide your bankroll by 40 to create a unit size. Let’s say you’re risking 200 dollars. Each unit would then be 5 dollars. This way you can have bets all over the board and more action and on your bigger wagers.
  2. Keep your powder dry. Risk 50% of your bankroll on bets that you make before the game, and keep 50% for bets you will make during the game.
  3. Focus on Value… The more options that there are on a prop bet, the worse value it is.
    • The operators price in a little more vig with each option, making it tough to make money. So, betting on who wins MVP with many options is a bad value bet, while which team scores first is a good value bet, since there can only be two choices.
  4. Bet the coin toss. Start the game with a bang and a good value.
  5. Don’t criss-cross yourself.
    • When placing multiple bets on the same event, it’s crucial to make sure you don’t place contradicting bets that make it impossible to be profitable. Create a vision in your mind of how you see the game playing out and create a strategy that follows that vision. You see the teams blitzing a lot, bet on turnovers and long touchdowns. You see a team wanting to control on the ground, bet on a running back for MVP.
